Welsh Wakeboard Open
by Sensation Staff 09 / 11 / 2010
The first ever Welsh Wakeboard Open was held at Glasfryn Wakeparc on Saturday 6th November and was a huge success, seeing many wakeboarding stars of the future take their turn on the Sesitec System 2.0 cable. This was the first wakeboarding competition to be held at a permanent System 2.0 wakeparc in the UK.
The event attracted 41 entries - a full capacity number of competitors - including riders who tried wakeboarding for the first time this summer to more experienced riders who have been practicing air tricks for years. Both cables were running all day so that competitors were able to practice on the smaller lake before taking their turn on the competition lake and showing off their skill on the Relentless Leviathan rail and kicker.
The event was divided into five divisions: Juniors (under 16), Ladies, Rookies, Men’s Open and Wakeskate with the following results: Juniors: 1st – Tom Bradley; 2nd – Taylor Knight; - 3rd Jordan Phillips; Ladies: 1st Sarah Hughes; 2nd – Robyn Seymour – Jones; 3rd – Sarah Killip; Rookies: 1st Marc Jackson; 2nd – Sebastian Kearns; 3rd – Andy Huddleston; Wake Skate: 1st – Callum Warren; 2nd – Jamie Nicol; 3rd – Ifor Jones; Men’s Open: 1st – Toby Yeo; 2nd – Nick Lang; 3rd - Jamie Nicol.
Rookies winner Marc Jackson, 21, from Mynytho said: “It was a brilliant day with a great crowd. I only started cable wakeboarding in July and am thrilled to have won the Rookies division as the competition was hot – the biggest class of the day with 16 entries.”
The Relentless Pro Wakeboard Team was on site all day performing demos and helping out with coaching tips for all the riders. The team included former Wakestock Champion Jonty Green, past Rococo Tour winners Matt Crowhurst and Lee Debuse, plus James Young who has just finished 3rd in the WWA Worlds.
“I am thrilled that the event went so well and the Welsh Wakeboard Open attracted so many competitors and spectators. It was good to see both cables running non-stop all day and everyone having such a great time.” Said Jonathan Williams-Ellis, owner of Glasfryn Wakeparc.
The day was rounded off with a spectacular fireworks display, live music from The Revivals and DJ Dan Jordan and prize-giving. The raffle in aid of the Welsh Air Ambulance raised over £200 and Sarah Killip from Abersoch won the first prize of a pair of tickets to Wakestock.
The Welsh Wakeboard Open was sponsored by Relentless, O’Shea, Off Axis, Abersoch Watersports and Alliance Magazine.
