The annual Abersoch Mackerel Race took place on August Bank
Holiday Saturday. Despite it being a rather dull and rough day, the
weather did not deter some 27 boats entering and over 100 anglers
enjoying the fun. Despite the anglers best efforts, for most the
mackerel were hard to find, as they have been all summer. This could
possibly be due to the dolphins who have provided delightful viewing in
the Sound all summer. The magnificent silver Rose Bowl was won by new
entrants Rob Huntbach and his fellow anglers Richard, Dave, Mo and
Peter, on board thier boat " Second Wind." In second place were other
race debutants, the anglers on board Martin Bisofsky's boat "Astro Turf."
From entrance fees and the sale of all the fish caught a total of £160
was raised. All money raised has been donated to Abersoch RNLI.
Next year's event will be on August Bank Holiday Saturday, which
is the 28th August, so get yoursleves along for a great day for all the
family and some fresh fish to take home.
Organiser of the event Miles Pickering made us chuckle when he
relayed a funny story about the Race. A barmaid in a local pub, who
shall be nameless, caught sight of the posters advertising the event.
She remarked upon what a good idea it was and enquired how the race was
started. " How do they do it - do they hold them by the tails and let
them go?"
This sounds like a fun variation on the event! We look forward to seeing it on the calendar next year!!!!

The Tidal Aid event on the main beach combined the Sandblast Football Tournament with the Glass Butter Volleyball tournament which took place in the afternoon. 8 teams gathered to battle it out on the two volleyball courts marked out on the sand. The crowds stayed on after the football to support the teams who were once again playing to raise money for the Air Ambulance. There were some great shots played and everyone made a real effort. The Abersoch & Fit girls put on a great show in their skimpy volleyball outfits to the delight of the crowd and managed to raise a lot of money collecting for the Air Ambulance in the charity buckets. The Red Indian Warriors played in next to nothing, branded with war paint and managed to distract a few of the opposition. The final was between One Hit Wonders and Bad Blood, with Bad Blood coming out on top after a hard fought final match. The rain stayed off and a great day was had by all. Sensation Group - organisers of the event would like to thank Mike Atherton for his volleyball refereeing along with the sponsors of the event - Glass Butter, White Stuff and Vimto for all their help, including goddies for the teams and refreshment sin the form of vimto for all the players. Matt Nicholls was a great MC and DJ play provided some funky tunes to keep the teams going. Many thanks to all those who attended fro all their support.
