Mackerel Race - 2009
by Bex Tappin 01 / 09 / 2009
The annual Abersoch Mackerel Race took place on August Bank
Holiday Saturday. Despite it being a rather dull and rough day, the
weather did not deter some 27 boats entering and over 100 anglers
enjoying the fun. Despite the anglers best efforts, for most the
mackerel were hard to find, as they have been all summer. This could
possibly be due to the dolphins who have provided delightful viewing in
the Sound all summer. The magnificent silver Rose Bowl was won by new
entrants Rob Huntbach and his fellow anglers Richard, Dave, Mo and
Peter, on board thier boat " Second Wind." In second place were other
race debutants, the anglers on board Martin Bisofsky's boat "Astro Turf."
From entrance fees and the sale of all the fish caught a total of £160
was raised. All money raised has been donated to Abersoch RNLI.
Next year's event will be on August Bank Holiday Saturday, which
is the 28th August, so get yoursleves along for a great day for all the
family and some fresh fish to take home.
Organiser of the event Miles Pickering made us chuckle when he
relayed a funny story about the Race. A barmaid in the Vaynol, who
shall be nameless, caught sight of the posters advertising the event.
She remarked upon what a good idea it was and enquired how the race was
started. " How do they do it - do they hold them by the tails and let
them go?"
This sounds like a fun variation on the event! We look forward to seeing it on the calendar next year!!!!
